Much like the recent storm swept through the northwest the night before, City blew Manchester United away at the their home ground. It was a statement three-nil triumph for their manager's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their championship potential as they consolidated their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Losses for Manchester United

This outcome represented successive Women's Super League defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their championship aspirations severely dented.

Manchester United's capacity to manage league and continental football with a limited team has been a widely debated subject since they earned a place in the Champions League. Reviewing the calendar, it always felt like this was the matchday that would truly test this ability. Unfortunately for the away side, they seemed tired throughout, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

The United manager had sought to rotate the squad with a a few alterations. Ella Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all added freshness, although the dropping of the on-form Malard to the bench caused surprise.

Manchester City, in contrast, have no similar loading concerns. Jeglertz made a single alteration from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her first start since returning from injury.

Dominant First Half

The storm clouds started to accumulate for the United boss and his side from the kickoff. This was a show of the quality from City whose energetic offense manipulated and tore United open with a superb first half showing that saw them score three goals in just over twenty minutes.

This left the home team firmly in control and left United disorganized. Prior to this encounter, the away side had conceded just six in this domestic competition but they disintegrated in the presence of Manchester City's attacking flair.

Opening Threats

The early indicators came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her power to muscle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot past the post. Hemp was at the core of everything from the start, using the room left by Jayde Riviere down United’s right side. Her deliveries were posing a threat and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg cleared off the line.

United had multiple sorties forward, their straightforward approach giving them options in the flanks but they could not trouble the City goalkeeper. Manchester City, on the other hand, dominated the ball, taunting their opponents and trying to lure them of their structure.

Goals Galore

They made their pressure count with almost the first period played when Fujino won the hosts a corner. A ball to the far post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's seventh header of the season.

They extended their cushion with two more goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was permitted to advance through the middle from defense, the field became spacious for City. The key Casparij picked the ball up on the right side before delivering a precise ground pass for Shaw to tap home. A short time later, they had a third after a rapid change in possession saw Lauren Hemp allowed the room to fire a shot home from distance.

Second Half

The most obvious substitution came from the United manager at the half-time as Melvine Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was ineffective to shift the momentum of the match. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came closest, hitting the post, but the away team were offensively poor and failed to record a solitary shot on goal.

The home side, meanwhile, could have added to their lead when a delightful Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the hosts. After failing to overcome any opponent who placed above them last season, City's side now have successes against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a commanding position after nine matches.
