New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using these drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
